The abc adventure began...
...when Ron & Carole Marten's opened their first restaurant in Cranbrook in B.C.'s Kootenays. After several years and a lot of home-made pies, the good old-fashioned hospitality and business savvy of the husband-and-wife team had created such a success that the couple opened a second restaurant, this time in Kamloops.
In 1983, the Martens opened their Clearbrook location and soon after had the opportunity to purchase the franchise rights to abc Family Restaurants. Business has been booming ever since. With a new look and a new name - abc Country Restaurants, the company is focused on continued expansion into Alberta and B.C. and on remaking its image into one that is more sophisticated, yet genuinely friendly and warm.

The restaurant in Abbottsford we visited today (2008 7 20)was experiencing a half-hour wait time which is probably not unusual for Sunday lunch. Gave us time to visit with our co-patrons. I had heard they served Mennonite food. The farmers' sauasage was OK. However, the objects that looked like verenike turned out to be cheese and potato-filled perogies, no cottage cheese. They were OK, a little dry as far as the gravy/cream and shortage of sour cream was concerned. The dessert that looked temptingly like maybe at least a whipped cheesecake had marshmallows in it, that weren't even all blended in...all-in-all, not the results that wil attract me back anytime soon for the buffet. The waitresses were all very efficient and cheerful.
